What food writers and food journalists cover

Food journalism and food writing overlap but are not identical. Journalism leans on reporting: sourcing, labour, regulation, who profits. Food writing leans on description and craft: what it tastes like and why that matters. Most working writers do some of both, and their profiles show which way they lean.
Briefing a food writer
Say whether the piece needs first-hand eating. A writer can research a regional cuisine from a desk, and it will read like it. If you need someone in the room, budget for the meal and the travel, and say who is paying.
Be clear about independence. If you are a brand commissioning coverage of your own product, say so up front — good food writers will take the work, but they will want the relationship disclosed to the reader, and so should you.

- What is the difference between a food writer and a food journalist?
- A food writer focuses on the food itself — taste, technique, history and description. A food journalist reports on the industry around it: sourcing, labour, regulation and money. Plenty of people do both, but if your brief is investigative you want the second, and if it is descriptive you want the first.
- How do I hire a food and wine writer?
- Read their published work, then contact them directly from their profile. This directory takes no commission and does not sit between you and the writer. If wine is central to the brief, check they have actually written about wine rather than just eaten alongside it — the two are different specialisms.
- Should a restaurant pay for a review?
- No. Paying for a review buys advertising and readers treat it accordingly. What you can legitimately commission is content — recipes, brand stories, menu copy — clearly published as yours. Keep the two apart and both work better.
