About

The place for travel writers who've actually been there.

travelwriters.org exists because AI broke travel content — and the industry needs a better way to find writers who can prove they've been somewhere.

Why this exists

Every tourism board, travel brand, and editor is drowning in AI-generated articles that say “nestled,” “vibrant,” and “charming” in every paragraph — hallucinating restaurant hours, listing venues that closed two years ago, and sounding identical to every other article about the same destination. Google knows this. The December 2022 E-E-A-T update added Experience as the first signal — a direct response to AI content.

For travel specifically, experience means: have you actually been there? An AI has not been to Georgetown. A writer who spent six weeks eating her way through Penang's hawker stalls has. That difference is the entire product.

The problem isn't that good travel writers don't exist — it's that buyers can't find them. The major associations (BGTW, SATW, IFWTWA) hide their members behind login walls or JavaScript-rendered pages that Google can't index. There's no central place for a tourism board to search for “Bali food writer” and get back writers who've actually been there, with clips to prove it.

travelwriters.org is that place. Open. Indexed. Searchable. And built around the one signal that matters: provable experience.

How we're different

Open by default

Every major travel writing association hides its members behind login walls. We're the first directory that's fully Google-indexed — writers get found; buyers can research without signing up.

Experience over credentials

Google's E-E-A-T update added the first E — Experience — for exactly this reason. A writer who spent six weeks in Penang knows things an AI never will. We built the directory around that principle.

Both sides of the market

Writers need commissions. Buyers need writers. Most platforms serve one side poorly. We built the wanted board specifically to show editors, tourism boards, and brands what writers are actually available — and for what kinds of work.

Who's behind it

travelwriters.org is built and operated by eAsia Digital, a travel media company focused on building open, authoritative guides to destinations across Southeast Asia and beyond. Our flagship guide, visitpenang.com, is City #1 of what we're building across the region.

We built travelwriters.org because we kept running into the same problem while commissioning content for our own guides: no good way to find writers with provable experience in a specific place. So we built the directory we wanted to use — and made it public.
