About Samantha Brown

Samantha Brown was born in 1970 in Albany, New York, and pursued a career in television presenting after studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Her long-running Travel Channel series — Passport to Europe (2004), Passport to Latin America (2006), Great Weekends (2007), World's Greatest Beaches (2008), and others — were among the network's most successful programmes for a decade. She was the anchor of American travel television during the early 2000s travel boom.

What distinguished Brown from other travel television presenters was her accessibility — she made international travel feel manageable and fun rather than exotic and expensive. Her presenting style was warm and genuinely curious, and she was willing to try things (eating unusual food, learning local dances, attempting unfamiliar customs) without irony or condescension.

Her more recent PBS series, Places to Love, has continued in the same register but with more emphasis on the human stories behind the destinations. She has written several travel guides and is a regular speaker on the travel industry circuit.
